When driving down steep hills in a manual transmission vehicle, change to a lower gear for improved speed control and to lessen the need for sudden braking
Shift to a lower gear before starting downhill, as it might be hard to do so while already descending. Use the same gear going downhill as you would uphill.
Always fully stop at all stop signs and red traffic lights. If there is a marked stop line on the pavement, make sure to stop there.
If there's no stop line, stop at the crosswalk, whether marked or not. If there's no crosswalk, stop at the edge of the sidewalk, or if there's no sidewalk, stop at the edge of the intersection before moving forward.
Slow down, listen, and look both ways to make sure the path is clear before moving through the intersection.
Keep a distance of at least five meters from the nearest rail or gate until the train or trains have passed.
Do not try to race a train to a crossing.
If flashing signal lights are present, wait for them to stop flashing. If the crossing has a gate or barrier, wait for it to rise before crossing the tracks.
Driving under, around, or through a railway gate or barrier while it's down is against the law and very dangerous.
In heavy traffic, make sure you have enough space to fully cross the tracks before starting, as stopping in the middle of railway tracks is not safe.
Avoid changing gears while crossing tracks.
If your vehicle gets stuck on a railroad crossing, quickly get everyone out and move to a safe distance. Then, call the appropriate authorities for help.
Be ready to stop behind most buses and other public vehicles, which must stop at railway crossings without gates, signal lights, or stop signs. School buses must stop at all railway crossings, whether or not gates or signal lights protect the crossing.
You must stop at a railroad crossing with a stop sign, unless a flagman tells you otherwise.
