  • Look for signs to find your exit
  • Choose the right lane
  • Use the left lane for left turns or going straight
  • Use the right lane for right turns or going straight
  • Don't enter a roundabout from the right lane if you plan to turn left
  • Slow down and watch for pedestrians as you approach the yield line at the roundabout entrance; stay in your lane
  • Check visually for all vehicles, including cyclists, already in the roundabout and those waiting to enter
  • Look at the traffic to your left and adjust your speed or stop at the yield sign if needed; give way to vehicles in the roundabout
  • Make sure there's enough space in the circulating traffic flow; don't enter right next to a vehicle already in the roundabout, as it may be exiting at the next exit
  • Travel counterclockwise and always stay to the right of the central island
  • Don't stop except to avoid an accident once inside the roundabout; you have the right of way over entering traffic and should not change lanes while in the roundabout; if you miss your exit in the inside lane, continue around until you reach your exit again

  • Signal your exit and watch for pedestrians
  • Keep your lane; stay to the left if you entered from the left lane or to the right if you entered from the right lane
  • Keep your position relative to other vehicles
  • Signal your plan to exit; use your right-turn signal once you have passed the exit before your desired one
  • Watch for vehicles on the right that continue to circulate around the roundabout if exiting from the left lane
  • Pull over for emergency vehicles: Give the right-of-way to the emergency vehicles. To do so, pull over to the right (if you have not entered the roundabout yet) or exit at your intended exit and proceed beyond the traffic island before pulling over.
  • Driving a large vehicle on a roundabout: A large vehicle like a truck or bus may need to use the full width of the roadway, including the apron (a mountable part of the center island next to the roadway) if provided. It also may need to occupy both lanes. Allow extra room alongside large vehicles to move.
  • Older traffic circles found in some parts of Ontario are bigger than roundabouts, which allows for faster speeds and requires traffic to merge and weave.
  • Modern roundabouts are smaller in size and use splitter islands (to direct traffic) at the entry points to reduce traffic speeds or to offer a safe place for pedestrians. The entry is also managed by the "yield to the left" rule; for instance, cars moving within the roundabout have the right-of-way over vehicles entering the circle.
