- Signal for a left turn and make sure the road ahead and behind is clear.
- Watch out for smaller vehicles, like bicycles, in front of the vehicle you want to pass, as well as vehicles turning left or people and cars coming from other roads or driveways.
- Start passing only after signalling.
- Signal your intention to return to your original lane after overtaking.
- Change lanes when you can see the entire front of the vehicle you're passing in your inside mirror. Avoid cutting off a vehicle by abruptly moving in front of it.
- If the vehicle you're passing accelerates, return to your original lane and avoid racing. Speeding up while another vehicle is trying to pass you is illegal and dangerous.
- You are within 30 meters of a pedestrian crossover.
- You want to pass to the left of a centerline within 30 meters of a bridge, viaduct, or tunnel.
- Approaching the crest of a hill or on a curve where you can't clearly see oncoming traffic, and there isn't enough clear distance ahead to pass safely.
