- Brake failure: If your brakes don't work when you pump the pedal, try applying the parking brake gently but firmly while holding the release button to stay in control.
- Gas pedal sticking: If your gas pedal gets stuck, try to lift it by slipping your foot underneath. If that doesn't work, turn on your hazard lights, shift to neutral, and stop safely off the road. Turn off the ignition and avoid driving further.
- Headlight failure: If your headlights fail at night, turn on your hazard lights, stop your vehicle safely off the road, and call for help. Driving without lights is dangerous and against the law.
- Trouble on the freeway: If you have problems on the freeway, never stop in the travel lanes. Use your hazard lights and pull over to the nearest shoulder as soon as you can. Leave your car through the door away from traffic and call for help. On high-speed roads like the Queen Elizabeth Way and the 400-series freeways, the Ontario Provincial Police will quickly respond.
- Wheels going off the pavement: If your wheels leave the pavement, avoid heavy braking. Keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and take your foot off the gas pedal to slow down. When you have control of the vehicle, steer towards the pavement, correct your steering, and increase speed once your wheels are fully back on the road.
- Tire blowouts: If a tire suddenly bursts, remove your foot from the gas pedal to slow down and steer firmly to pull off the road safely.
